I received my mittens from Kris, they are lovely. My colors,nice long cuff, wonderful job knitting. And so many extras, I will post a pic later. My pal, however, has not received her box and I am afraid it is lost. I don't know what to do as I don't have the postal reeipt never having had a package lost. I thought perhaps I will send a second box of goodies right out and then make another pair of mittens. Any thoughts? I am really bummed about this.

And it is an amazing and wonderful package! First off, these beautiful mitered mittens are mine! All mine! And they match my outrageously bright magenta coat. Aren't they beautiful?

Then there's the rest of the box. It is stuffed to bursting with wool from Cary's own flock. And when I say bursting I mean it. She stuffed the box so wonderfully full that after I opened it, I couldn't get the contents compressed back in. All the fibers and yarn are from her flock! That makes it extra special!

Fibers included are:
Deep Teal/Green - Merino Corriedale Pin roving
Natural Cream - 100% Corriedale Roving
Chocolate Brown - Correidale, Pygora, Glitz roving
Natural Fawn - Corriedale, Kid Mohair and silk roving
Natural Grey Yarn - Mill spun worsted weight Corriedale

And if that weren't enough there's White Heather Flavored coffee from her coffee shop and chocolate. Amazing! I am so pleased and happy that I can't thank Cary enough. So thank-you, Cary! Your knitting and wool are so beautiful and I'm lucky to have them!

And this is why I'm a little delayed in posting pictures - two of my babies turned 5.

You guys asked for lamb photos, will this one do?

This picture is of my one and only bottle lamb this year. She was christened Francie by my grandson, and she is a very special lamb from a very special ewe in our flock. She is very tiny, but she is thriving. She will be the last lamb from our dear old ewe, Eve, and she will have a home here for all of her days,just like her mama. Right now, she is living in the house sleeping in a converted play pen.

I was outside skirting (cleaning) fleece and she was "helping" when I looked down to find her curled up in the skirtings. Will it tug at your heartstrings as much as it did mine to know that this is her mama's wool? I will be keeping some of this fleece for myself and I'm thinking of future yarn for mittens from it would be nice.ETA - I should mention that her mama did not pass away, she is just very old for a sheep and had an awfully hard time having Francie and her twin sister, so she will officially go into "retirement" and not have to have any more babies, just keep growing lovely wool for us ;)

Yay! The Mittens Are Here! The Mittens Are Here!

Yay! I have been checking the mailbox everyday and they have finally arrived! I think that they would have arrived sooner but the post office held onto my package a couple of days for fun. Anyway, Katie from Yarn Love made my mittens! Here they are (yes, that is one of my cats in the background whining about how i get to go outside and he doesn't):

I love green! It is, by far, my favorite color. Blue is second. So, these are great and they fit wonderfully. Katie also included some wonderful green yarn (Charlotte Bronte worsted weight 100% organic merino wool! Sounds wonderful doesn't it!). There was also a pattern for a lace shrug that i started almost immediately. It has a sideways construction which i have been dying to try. I am already 8 repeats into a 9 repeat shrug! I'll post pictures when i finish that for Katie's benefit. Here's a group shot of my package:

The rest of the stuff would be two packets of Soak (aqua and flora) which is perfect because i just finished a couple shawls that need to be blocked and gifted. And some candy. Katie, if there looks to be less candy than you sent, it's because i opened the package and promply ate some! And did i mention the yarn? It's wonderful! It's so smooth to knit with. Here is a picture of it up close and personal:

Oh, and here is an arbitrary picture of my cats being silly, wishing desperately that they could go outside. Too bad they don't have claws!

This swap was wonderful! Thank you Deb for hosting and thank you Katie for my wonderful package! I can't wait to wear my mittens (too bad it was 60 today)!

Thank you Denise! First of all, I always wanted some flip-top mittens. Secondly, they are the prettiest shade of green!
And look at all the goodies I got: alpaca sock yarn, cute little needles, cable needles (which are coming in quite handy), postcards, chocolate...and more! I'm going to see how well alyssum grows in planters on my deck. And I put my mittens safe in sound in the mitten box to be broken into at the first sign of cold next winter! What a great package!

Yes, those are army fatigue paper shreds with teal tissue paper. I *knew* I had green Easter shreds downstairs....I just forgot they were army green. Well....at least the stuff inside the wrapping is good!

This girls got skills. She studied my blog and sent me Luzianne Decaf Iced tea Bags (which I have to special order online because they don't sell them in New England), and Weight Watcher's coconut chocolates which are my favorite ones and are perfect since I just started back on my weight loss journey (lost 4 pounds since Wednesday).

The mittens she chose for me are ones I have in my queue but had not knit and had not purchased the pattern yet (and I own just about all of them!) She chose 2 of my favorite colors, orange and green and did the cuff in purple which matches great with both colors. She sent me that pattern and also a new one called Merion Mitts. She also sent the softest yarn I have ever felt to knit them with, called Jil Eaton Minnow Merino by Classic elite.

Yay!!!! I am done with my half of this mitten swap! I took my package to the post office and gladly sent it priority mail. I would have pasted pictures but my recipient knows who i am and i don't want to ruin the suspense! But now that i am done, i sort of wonder what i will knit now. Summer is coming (although you can't tell from the weather outside) and i will have the urge to play frisbee or ride my bike rather than knit. I sort of had a Climbing Vines Pullover in the works but it turns out that the yarn i bought makes me itch. I think that i will frog it and turn it into a shawl from my mother-in-law.

Well, wasn't that a tangent! Anyway, i am extremely grateful to Deb for hostessing this swap. The past two have been a wonderful experience!

Now for the unpleasantries......I'm at a loss here. I have to say that this is one of the worst rounds that we have had of this swap and some people will not be asked back for the next one. THREE people did not check in last week and all three are repeaters from last week.

As a swap receiver, do you appreciate that I do this each week to keep your partners on track so that you get your package after all of your hard work? Is it worth it for me to get up every Saturday and post this before I do anything with my own family? I am so frustrated right now.

If I don't hear from one of these specific people by week's end, they will be asked to leave the swap and I will reassign the partners to each other. The other two people are in danger of the same thing happening to their partners a week after that.

Guys - I get nothing out of hostessing this swap for you. Please hold up your end of the deal. People do not deserve to be let down when they fulfill their own responsibilities. I understand that life happens, and sometimes prevents you from getting online. I get that because it has happened to me too. I don't care if you miss 100 check ins, as long as I know that you are well and are able to finish your commitment here. If you are ever in a situation where you can't finish your commitment, I am VERY understanding of that too. There would be no hard feelings, I just need to know that I need to switch around partners before anyone starts mailing.

PLEASE check in this week and every week after this. If this commitment is too much, please rethink joining up for the next round.

Sorry for the rant. It had to be done. It's the most unpleasant thing knitting has ever brought into my life.

In looking back at check in history, I have two brand new swappers who continually miss check in every other week. This swap is not a difficult one to take part in. I ask for weekly check ins to ensure a 100% complete swap. I am easy going and understandable and am fine with finishing the swap late, past the due date, especially since I am usually the one who is latest LOL. I don't think checking in with a swap community once per week is too much to ask. I know that vacations and illness and other unexpected things get in the way that cause a check in not to happen for a week or two, but every other week? Without explanation that doesn't sit well with me. I'm the one to impress if you enjoy this swap. There are future rounds to join.....

Katie's Fiddlehead Progress

I made headway over the weekend. I was able to clear my knitting plate (Emergency baby knitting had ensued immediately prior.) and get some knitting done. These are really dense mittens, but I've been enjoying the pattern so far. They're DK weight alpaca/merino blend yarn and I'm knitting them on size 00 needles. In all fairness, I am a loose knitter, and this yarn must be just a hair heavier than the original. But they do still stretch and a dense mitten should be warm and help cut down the wind.

I dyed the yarn myself - there are 5 shades of green for the background and the blue will be carried throughout. I'll check fit before knitting up the lining for these mittens, though....

I frogged my first mitten lat night because I am doing a 1x1 rib with Drops Alpaca and can't see my stitches. So, somewhere along I knit some purls and purled some knits and couldn't find the errors. Frogging was my only course of action. If you ever use this yarn don't pick a dark color. LOL

Everytime I attempt a knitting pattern, I learn something new. This time... when knitting a fair isle pattern, one must swatch in fair isle :) I knitted a few inches in and realized this mitten is way too big for a human. I decreased a needle size and now I'm back on my way, pasted the point I was before the frog :) I love the pattern and love the yarn! It's so fun to knit!

A Question About Dyeing

I have a question for those of you out that that have more experience with dyeing than i do. And if you've dyed anything any time any where you have more experience than me.

I have been knitting this sweater out of 100% Acrylic (let's not argue about this, it was a gift and i can wash it in the machine with much worry) and it is a sort of a heathered spring green. The more i knit with it the less i like the color. I would prefer that it be more of a kelly green.

So here's the question: Is there any dye method that you know of that can take to Acrylic yarn?

Any suggestions would be welcome!

I started mine yesterday. I have it in a bag with all of my sock yarn left overs. I have more of each yarn than is needed for one square but I don't want to knit them right next to each other, so I am waiting to finish more socks to knit more of the same.

Hey there mitten peoples!
I have done a trial swatch but am afraid the pattern is too boring/blah. I tried the corrugated ribbing (meh - it seems "thick" but I did it only for a little bit just to get the feel of it) and I did a pattern that I had been considering. Am very very interested in feedback.
The yarn is Noro Silk Garden Sock in two colourways though the one is very beige to allow the other one to "pop"

Oh my, this posting to the blog is new to me. I have my mittens started. I made it to my Local Yarn Shop last Tuesday and purchased some beautiful Noro Kureon Sock Yarn and some solid color Lang Jawoll. I have been knitting since, and the first mitten is just waiting for the thumb and the finishing of ends. Last night I cast on for the second mitten.

I usually do the mitten first, and then the second mitten and then go back to do the thumb.

The challenge with the Noro is going to be to get the same (or at least almost the same) colorway to sequence in the second mitten and the thumbs.

Is it best to post pictures? If so, I will try to figure out how to do so.

I am wondering if there is anything that is not obvious about the cuff. In particular, I like how you can see the changing colourways as they travel up the ribbing of the cuff. Is it just like K2 in colourway one, P2 in colourway two? Could it be that simple? Is there anything else I should know? I'm thinking I might try for this effect in the mitts i make....
Has anyone ever done a similar stripey ribbed cuff like this before?

I started my mittens today. I'm using Drops Alpaca...mmmmmmmm sooooooo soft. I decided upon the Smockies pattern but I am going to turn them into full mittens (per the swap guidelines). They're knit on size ones, so I think it'll take awhile to make any progress worthy of a picture. Plus, I don't think they will be much to look at until they are fully embellished. ;0)

Soooo...I am loving the process of making these mittens for my Pal! I have handspun some Finnsheep wool into yarn and am making the Finnish Mitten pattern from the book Folk Mittens. The bright, vibrant colors are a bit outside my comfort range - lol - and I wondered if you all would look at the three photos below and leave a comment telling me which one is your favorite mix of colors, just by glancing at them? I know that all monitors show color differently and that you are only looking at a photo of yarn...but if any one of the three looks just a bit more appealing to you than the others, please say so ;D The last picture, with the red and darker orange, has the colors called for in the pattern. The sequence to finish up the mitten is a design with the pink, then red, then orange. What do you think?

I've decided that I'll be using the Fiddlehead Mittens for my partner (seen below in original colors) and have dyed up five lovely shades of green, just for her. In order not to give away too much information, I'm not going to share what the main color is so I don't give too much away. And I think from here on out the pictures will be mostly black and white (if I can figure out how to do that on my picture editing software!)

Dyed on lovely & soft worsted weight 50% alpaca/ 50% wool yarn. I hope she likes them - I certainly had fun putting together the colors.

What are your favorite colors?Any you dislike? I am not that into brown or anything too earthy, but if you throw bright cerise into it I'll probably like it just fine. My favourite colour is pink. I like blues and purples and pinks and reds...?? Just not fall colours.

Do you like Latvian type patterns? If so, what are your favorite patterns? Yes I do but I don't know enough about them to tell you which ones are my favourites. I like geometrics...??

Do you desire mittens for yourself, your "special someone else" or your child? ME ME!!! Pick me!!!

What is the measurement from your wrist to the tip of your longest finger? Short. I'll get back to you on that

What other things do you enjoy knitting? I'd enjoy knitting anything right now. I have been too busy. I do really enjoy baby clothes since they go so fast and are teeny and cute!

What sort of needles do you enjoy working with? (straights vs circs, bamboo vs aluminum) I tried bamboo needles adn they feel too light. I generally use straights as I am faster with them. I don't have many good quality circulars.

What are your favorite colors?
Reds, oranges, yellow, gold and greens, colors from nature. I also like grey combined with navy or red and white.

Bright neon/crazy wild colors. I do make an exception for Noro combinations, which I do like.

Yes, very much. And Norwegian/Nordic type as well.

How long have you been knitting & how did you learn?
19 years, but only seriously for 5. My mom taught me the very basics as a child and I dabbled with it over the years until I got pregnant with my twins. Then the knitting & nesting started in earnest.

Would you consider your skill level to be beginner, intermediate or advanced?
I’m fairly advanced, but there is still a lot I have left to learn.

What are your favorite colors?
All of them. Since I’ve started dyeing I don’t actually have a particular favorite. I do prefer saturated colors to pastels, though. My most commonly worn colors are bright pink/fuchsia, intense turquoise/aqua, warm chocolate brown, black, and rosey pink.

Any you dislike?
Overall pastel shades aren’t my favorite, but I do like some on a case by case basis. I usually like the lighter shades in solids, heathers and semi-solid colors, it’s just pastels in multi color yarns that aren’t my thing.

Do you like Latvian type patterns? If so, what are your favorite patterns?
Yes, I am a huge fan of Latvian type patterns, and I especially prefer the ones with floral motifs. But I have yet to run into one that I don’t actually like.

I have been knitting since my junior year of college (about three years) and i learned because a friend of mine handed me a ball of yarn and told me to knit her a scarf. I went online to knitinghelp.com and taught myself.

I would probably be advanced in some areas but mostly intermediate if you take the average.

What are your favorite colors?

I love color. It is probably easier to say what colors i don't like. I like very saturated colors.

Any you dislike?

Most purples for example. Most pinks. And Most browns. Definitely no pastels.

Yes.

I like Lillyfield (it's on Ravelry). But really, i like them all. But i also like cabled mittens. I am not super great at cabling, so i am astounded at what people can do.

A pair of embellished or patterned mittens (stranded, embroidered, or maybe try this cool idea of converting a sock pattern to mittens).

Participation Requirements: You must post on your own blog or this one, if you do not have one of your own, once per week at the minimum. Posting regularly helps show that you're going to be around for the duration of the swap and helps your Secret pal to get to know you and your likes and dislikes better so they can spoil you appropriately. If you do have your own blog, you must visit this blog at least once per week to check in for messages that I need to get out to all participants, and comment somewhere to let me know that you have been there. It's not a nice feeling to wonder if you are all alone. I will be having mandatory, weekly check-ins here on the blog. I try to get them up early every Saturday morning but it depends on life. If I go out of town, I will usually put it up there earlier. If you miss two check-ins in a row, you will be dropped from the swap, so please set a reminder on your calendar or something so you don't forget. These check-ins have worked well in the past. It's nice to know that everyone is safe and still in this.

You must also contact your partner at least once per week either by sending an e-card, email or letter by snail mail.
