Lovely and alone with a lecherous new guardian after her father dies, Lady Delia Ellsworth flees his wandering hands... but finds she has run straight into the bedchamber of the visiting Marquess of Durham, one of London's most eligible bachelors! Only just escaping with her virtue, she finds she cannot forget his kisses... When her guardian spreads the rumor that she has been compromised, Lady Delia takes matters into her own hands and escapes to London with nothing but her maid and her wits.
Mason Broadstone, Marquess of Durham, is surprised to find himself the subject of London's gossips after an encounter in the country with the beautiful but scandalous Lady Delia Ellsworth. Once he hears he also seems to be the subject of a titillating new novel that has taken the town by storm, one with a compromised young lady and a lascivious guardian...he begins to think the exquisite Lady Delia had not been out to trap him into a marriage when she dashed into his bedchamber! Maybe, just maybe, the lady should be his after all?

I found this novel to be rather unoriginal. Delia's guardian is set on marrying her in order to get his hands on her fortune. The Marquess, Delia's love interest, is definitely a rake, and frankly I didn't care much for him. The Marquess doesn't even give Delia a chance to explain herself when she suddenly bursts into his bedchamber. Instead, he starts to seduce her, and accuses her of being a wanton whore who must normally rendevue in this bedchamber with a footman for a quick romp. Later on, trying to forget about Delia, the Marquess gets himself a French mistress. The guy was a total jerk and Delia deserved way better.Again, most of the conflict seemed typical of a regency novel; nothing new or original here. It was a bit slow and I didn't care much for the characters. Some typos, even some words missing from sentences, which totally change the sentences' meaning. I don't think this novel is worth $4.99.

A Lady Compromised The Ladies Book 1 edition by Ava Pennington Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I couldn't get into this story at all. It was the usual tale of the young, beautiful innocent being abused by her guardian. A handsome, titled man has to spend the night at the house and she runs to his bedroom when the guardian sneaks into hers.
The girl is supposed to be intelligent but never can bring herself to investigate the will her father left. She runs away to London and has her book published. The story she wrote parallels what has happened to her.
The hero is involved with smuggling activities, but apparently that sideline story never gets resolved -- at least according to other reviews.
The story wasn't compelling to me. I didn't care enough about any of characters to finish.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and its characters. I immediately downloaded the second book "A Lady's Education" using my monthly Prime free read. I then wanted to read the third one in the series, but, I don't see it listed. I will read other books by this author.
Pennington's work was better than I expected. Few writers have the talent of Julia Quinn or Lisa Kleypas. I was pleasantly surprised by how good this book was. For those interested, it is not "clean", traditional regency.
Overall okay story line. The whole espionage background was totally dropped at the end, never tied up and never mentioned again. A little odd. If the heroine had said how gorgeous the hero was just one more time, I would have stopped reading. There were also sooooo many grammatical errors it was off putting. Proof reading is soooo important.
hugely formulaic and derivative. Jane Austen's incisive wit is absent and Georgette Heyer's master of nuance is missing. Much as I like the better chick lit, most Regency romances, like this one, are stuck in a mold that can only be broken by an author developing real characters with believable feelings and actions. Neither Austen nor Heyer would ever choose lust over wit.
Delia's guardian is trying to force her to marry him. In a bid to stop his plan she flees to an occupied room. Mason gets the wrong idea when the young lady comes into his room at night.
Character ruined, lady Delia goes to London on her own and supports herself with her writing. From here we get a lot of romance and a touch of crime and hopefully, love.
The historic setting is expressed well and the author captures the females' characters dual natures to a tee. Worth the read.
This book has too much going on for my tastes. But it's not unusual for me to really enjoy books that others' review as boring. To each their own..... I have a low tolerance for angst, so reading about Delia's guardian forcing himself on her and later kidnapping her and nearly raping the hero's sister was not the least bit enjoyable to me.
The dialogue is pretty good, but some manners and events were just a little off and didn't ring true. For instance, when Delia meets Freddy, she introduces herself as Mrs. Delia Mannering. The next time they see each other he makes a big deal about not knowing her Christian name (wasn't he listening or did the author forget?). In addition, as a lady alone in London, I had a hard time believing she would be so "neighborly" to introduce herself to a total stranger. This is not a huge issue, but there were a lot of small issues like this that require suspension of disbelief.
I believe this is a debut novel and the author shows promise. The writing was enjoyable to read, the characters were somewhat well developed, but I really didn't like the plot.
Spoiler....... If you want to read about an heiress in hiding from a lecherous guardian, supporting herself as a novelist, while the hero smuggles brandy to spy on France with his best friend and fends off his spying mistress who's involved with the guardian who kidnaps the heiress and the hero's sister to be rescued by the hero and best friend who the sister is in love with....whew! Then by all means, this is your book. The author does an admiral job of keeping all of these plot devices straight and following a logical sequence, it was just too over the top for me.
